Preconditions

Check Your JAVA version
1. Open a command window
2. Type: 'java -version' and press [Enter]
If You see something like 'java ... JRE ... 1.3.0'
or a higher number (than 1.3) then everything is ok.

You must have JAVA 1.3 (or newer) installed on Your system. If You dont have it yet, go to SUNs JAVA site (download section), download and install the JAVA runtime environment ...
Then come back and download n-LO.

Installation

On a Mac system follow the instructions below
(this is a hint from David Lane)
"Many Macintosh users may not know how easy it is to run a Java program (All Macs come with Sun's Java installed). The easiest instruction for a novice would be to copy the jar file to their home directory, run the terminal program, and then type in the Java command."

Ok, create a directory for n-LO in your home/ directory
f. ex.: home/LO/,
Copy the file LO.jar to that directory,
Run the terminal program, switch to that directory,
and type (one line)
java -jar -Xmx64M LO.jar

(Macintosh users look here)

Create a directory for n-LO (f.ex.: C:\LO).
Hint: Use a directory-path without spaces in the name. F.ex.:
C:\My Files\LO is a bad choice (but not impossible).
C:\My_Files\LO is a good choice.

Download the file LO.jar (do not rename the file) and save it to the created directory.
Hint: JAVA is very case sensitive, so LO and Lo are different!

On Windows32
You can simply double-click on the LO.jar file...

Open a command window. Switch to that directory (important)!
Assuming the directory for n-LO is C:\LO, You should type
cd .. (press [Enter])
repeatedly until You are in the root directory of the installation drive...
Type
cd C:\LO

Then start n-LO for the first time (from within that directory) by typing
java -jar LO.jar

For subsequent program starts a start script (for now only on Windows or eCS, OS/2 systems) is automatically created...

Open the 'Help' menu and read a least the introduction...

Example data

For program-testing You might want some example data. We have created a collection of different optimization problems for this purpose. Download this LO team file (*.lot) to a directory of Your choice -- but outside the LO-directory -- and import it with the Team Import method.
